AKC Scent Work
AKC Scent Work
The sport of Scent Work is based on the work of professional detection dogs (such as drug dogs), employed by humans to detect a wide variety of scents and substances. In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs saturated with the essential oils of Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress. The cotton swabs are hidden out of sight in a pre-determined search area, and the dog has to find them. Teamwork is necessary: when the dog finds the scent, he has to communicate the find to the handler, who calls it out to the judge.

Intro to Handler Discrimination
Novice Edition
Prerequisites: Completion of our Intermediate Obedience class, or CGC title, or with instructor approval.
The Handler Discrimination Division of AKC Scent Work uses the target scent of the handler, rather than the odor of an essential oil.

The handler is required to provide the scented article for Handler Discrimination Classes. For the Novice class, the required scented article is a cotton glove or cotton sock.
In AKC novice HD, the handler-scented item is placed in a cardboard box. The dog must discriminate between which of ten identical boxes, and indicate which box holds the article. (One of the other boxes holds an article scented by the judge, the other eight are empty).

This class will help get teams ready to compete at the Novice Level.
This class will not be offered during our October session.
